Cozy Cabbage

What a great day at the market last Sunday — we hope you’re following us on social media so you can see all the beautiful snapshots taken throughout the day, from the gorgeous sesame bagels at Dough Co, to the always smiling Marlon at Fairy Juiceposing with his vibrant juices or the stretch tables of stunning produce at Halal Pastures Farm and the "market pie" from the Dough Nation Pizza Truck. It's always so fun to see what inspires them at the market each week.

Not pictured on our Instagram stories, but no less compelling, was the appearance of a massive bulldog behind the Bien Cuit tent. And while bread vendor and market celebrity, Gigge does, in fact, have three live bulldogs at home, I’m not talking about an actual petNo, this was Serenity, the bulldog statue that used to sit proudly along Main Street outside of the spa, which Gigge just won at a charity auction. Tune in this week to see what she renamed it and, more importantly, how her wife took the news!

The first day of October arrived with a tangible morning nip, but these cooler mornings can still turn into bright sunny days, so dress in layers for maximum coziness at the market. This Sunday should hit 80 degrees again!

Speaking of heat, Gira’s Garden Hot Sauce will be back at the market this week. I’m still working my way through a bottle ofsearing yet sweet peach habanero sauce, which I’ve been enjoying on this sheet pan vegetable egg bake. It’s great meal for these busy chilly mornings and the perfect way to use up your Letterbox or Titusville Farm eggs and market veggies. To be enjoyed with a slice of market sourdough, natch.

This hot sauce would also be great on some sweet potato nachos! I’ll certainly be stocking up on sweet potatoes this weekend. Their antioxidants and beta-carotene make them a great choice for this time of year, when the food we put into our bodies takes on extra importance. (Move over swimsuit season, I’m more concerned about cold and flu season!) And they’re so delicious, roasted simply with some salt and pepper, or boiled and mashed and served alongside fresh Letterbox chicken thighs.

(Another way to use those chicken thighs? Try this sheet pan chicken made interesting (and seasonal) with the addition of fennel and apples, also both plentiful at the market right now.)

For a more indulgent way to enjoy this mighty tuber, grab some maple syrup from Maplebrook Creamery, nuts of your choice from Kariba Farms, and try this baked sweet potato with maple creme fraiche recipe. Looking to ride the decadent train one stop even further? How about these sweet potato cinnamon buns with brown butter cream cheese frosting?

Heathcote Bakery will be here this week with owner Suzanne Lyon’s mouthwatering, paper-thin cookies. Just look at them! Irresistible! You can buy them individually or by the pack. The pack is such a great gift to bring to a party, a meeting or a book group.

And, speaking of gifts...Ariella Ceramics has such lovely pieces to enhance your kitchen or home. The sunflowers and dahlias at Titusville are also very much up to the task.

A couple of things "non-market" worth mentioning: I'll be leaving the market promptly on Sunday to get to the First Annual Sleepy Hollow Oyster Count-Up, a collaboration between Sustainable Sleepy Hollow and the fine folks at the Billion Oyster Project, who are committed to restoring oyster beds along the Hudson River. Oysters help clean water and protect against climate change, and a bunch of us volunteers will be counting their numbers this weekend. Come on by Horan’s Landing from 3:30pm to 5pm— there will be lots of great information and some activities for the little ones!

And, because when it rains it pours, there’s even another fun event to get to this Sunday, either before or after you’re done shopping for food! The Wickers Creek Market, organised by Morning Glory Market’s very own Pascale Le Draoulec, and local vintage expert Sara Peluso, will be happening at the Dobbs Ferry Waterfront Park from 10am to 4pm. There will be a fabulous array of curated antiques and vintage goods (clothing, furniture, jewelry, art and more) and the historic schooner Apollonia will be docked and offering sails for a small fee. Sign up in advance for the sailing here, and go find something amazing to add to your collection!

Gosh, I sure wish I could be in two places at once this weekend! But one thing’s for sure, with all our amazing vendors and musician Julie Corbalis at the market, I’ll be very happy to be at the Irvington Farmers Market with you all.
