September brings Honeycrisps, Sweet Maias, Kuri squash, and Bartlett pears!
Happy back-to school season! It's the time of year when weekends -and what you do with them - become even more precious… and what better way to spend a Sunday morning than at the Irvington Farmers Market, where we've got great food, music, vibes and...pottery.
Did anyone else scoop up anything the last time Ariella Ceramics was here at the market? I treated myself to one of her stunning berry bowls which has, thus far, held some Italian market plums and cherry tomatoes before moving to my bedside table where it holds my keys. It’s too pretty to go into a cupboard while we wait for berry season to return!
With school back in session and summer coming to a close, our routines are shifting, and you might find your energy levels shifting too! I like to shop for the inevitability of my cooking energy waxing and waning.
If you want to stick to "easy mode" in the kitchen as you adjust to new routines, we have lots of delicious choices at the market, such as That Pasta Club’s stuffed pastas! I tried their roasted zucchini tortellini and it was a revelation. Pro tip: Keep it super simple, with just a drizzle of Agape Premium EVOO, shaved parmesan, and heady market herbs, to let the pasta really shine. They’ve also got some excellent sauces too, such as their sweet corn sauce which I paired with this classic cast-iron steak from R&M Farm.
For a side dish, I roasted up some Halal Pastures kuri squash, a beautiful reddish orange winter squash that has a sweet, nutty flavor. Curious about kuri and up for cooking this week: Try this kuri, mushroom and kale tart with a little help from Tivoli Farm Mushrooms and Madura Farm kale.
And speaking of tarts, the first of the honeycrisp apples have arrived at the market! Visit Mead Orchards and start snacking. They’re perfect on their own, sliced and dipped into any spread from SAHA GUYS, tucked in a sandwich with some deliciously sharp Aux Bons Fromages cheese. Looking to bake? With Kariba Farms at the market with their dried fruit and nuts, now is the perfect time to attempt this apple galette with almond cream. Mead is offering a Rosh Hashanah special this week to greet the New Year: a four-pound bag of honey crisp apples plus a jar of Mead honey for $25 (instead of $30).
Do visit the lovely Charlotte of Charlotte’s Home Kitchen for all your cake needs! They’re delicious and stunning, often decorated with gorgeous edible flowers from her kitchen garden, and most are gluten and dairy free, though there is nothing lacking in depth of flavor. She’s an elusive vendor at Irvington, so don’t miss her while she’s here! Plan a dinner (or tea) party around one of her desserts.
One thing that is sure to help with those new early morning routines is a new soap! Please stop by the Fountain Roots tent and choose from their wide array of sustainably-sourced soaps.
We’ve also got BBQ master Jeremy from SMOK’D back at the market for those of you who crave BBQ-d meats. Cornish henson a spit anyone? Or why not pick up the market pie from Dough Nation Pizza Truck? We love watching the pizzaiolos wander the market first thing in the morning to see what seasonal produce will catch their eye and end up on a pie!
If you're not going away this long weekend, do stop by! We promise to make it worth your while.
