Figs and Cabbage Delights

Last week’s market was officially the first day of the season where I was glad to have worn layers and bundled up. Just in time for the cooler weather, let’s talk about cabbage!

Great Joy Farm has a great selection of it right now, and it’s a perfect wintry vegetable for all kinds of cozy dishes. For starters, you can make kimchi, which can brighten up all kinds of food and can last for more than 3 months in the fridge. And is very good for your gut. And who doesn't want a healthy gut? Stoneberry Farm has beautiful greens that, when wilted, would beautifully flavor some kimchi noodle soup. You can also pick up some pork from FarmEats and try some of these gingery cabbage rolls with pork and rice, or use bacon from Goode and Local and pasta from La Trafila in creamy pasta with bacon and red cabbage. If you’re looking for a delicious and simple side dish, try this suspiciously delicious creamed cabbage.

Figs are another seasonal delight that will be available at Wright’s Farm this weekend! I embarrassed myself only slightly by yelping when I realized they were in season. (I really love figs.) Their sweet taste and unique texture make them a fantastic fixture in autumnal salads; pick up some blue cheese from Cooperstown Cheese and tomatoes from Caradonna Farm to use in tomato, fresh figs and blue cheese salad, or roast your figs with sweet potatoes from Madura Farm. This fall fig and chicken sandwich would also taste incredible with chicken from R&M Farm and ciabatta from Bien Cuit or Wave Hill Breads. Last, but certainly not least, we have dessert: from vanilla fig scones to a fig and almond cake, you’re bound to have something delectable to finish off any meal.

The day has finally come! This Sunday, Ready, Set, Sharp! Knife Sharpening will be back at the market, so don’t forget to bring any kitchen utensils you need to get sharpened before you get cooking. We’ll also have River Valley Community Grains selling locally grown, regenerative flours, oats, and so much more. Grab some seafood or veggie paella from Spain at Home and hot tea from Teagevity while you enjoy the fall weather and Sam Brown’s incredible set from 10:30-12:30.

We’ll see you at the market!
