It’s safe to come to the market again!

It's practically “balmy” in New York. It's actually summer in New Zealand where our fearless market manager, Celia, is spending a couple of weeks visiting friends and family.  I am stepping in to write the blog this week in her absence.

Celia reports that the beach is as beautiful as she left it and the Luisa plums, NZ's darling of the fruit world, are as sweet as she remembers them and she is getting her full!  She's been visiting farm stands, including one that's drive-through and works on an “honesty box,” system. Love that. We thank you, our loyal shoppers for braving the extremely cold temps on Feb. 8th. Troopers, all of you!

Oh, and while we're doling out “thanks,” we thank you as well for getting us on the final ballot for BEST FARMERS MARKET in the Best of Westchestercompetition. It means a lot. Now, let's win this thing! Vote here. Please forward it to all of your friends who enjoy our Sunday market as much as you do.

Remember when the winter markets used to be so much smaller than the summer markets? Not anymore! We have a very packed house of vendors on Sunday - over 40! Not to worry, we have the biggest shoehorn available and we always manage to squeeze everyone in.

Fish like frigid waters so it will be plentiful this week. Pick up your favorite white fish to make this Mediterranean fish stew with a Sicilian twist. Prefer beef stews? Make this Patricia Welles beef daube recipe.... a classic, bright beef stew from Provence. Serve with mashed potatoes, or, wide noodles, like pappardelle.

You can pick up your pasta from La Trafila. They make all their pasta by hand and have intriguing and authentic pasta shapes. And, if you buy their sauce you've got a gourmet Italian dinner in the bag. A quick and easy dinner may be exactly what you need on Sunday  if you're just returning from a week-long ski vacation. We've got options!

This week, we welcome Mel’s Pierogies to the market. She's built legions of fans at the Hastings Farmers Market in a short amount of time and we know she'll do the same in Irvington, too.

You can pick up a batch of freshly baked empanadas from Del Norte. Or dumplings from Grumpy Dumpling. Serve any of these with some market greens, of course. All three of our farmers are back this week. Halal Pastures has some gorgeous carrots for that daube. Do yourself a favor and pick up some of the large white Hakurei turnips from Titusville Farms. Quarter them and dip them in any Aya Hummus or Mediterranean spread from Bonnes Saveurs.

No Luisa plums for us! But we do have delicious apples and you should make this apple Bundt cake with a cider honey glaze...especially since Boogie Down Bronx Honey is back this week!

See you at the market!

And don't forget to VOTE for us here.
