Season Feedings!
Well, Irvington, what a year it’s been! We’ve had markets in the blazing sun and in a driving snow as well. A huge thanks to our amazingly committed vendors for making it through the blizzard at the last market — and thank you to you, our shoppers, for showing up to support them!
This year, we saw a change in management at the market tent, welcomed a new intern, lots of new vendors, and raised tons of donations for SNAP families and Feeding Westchester! It’s been an absolute pleasure to meet this community, and I hope you’re having the best holiday season with friends and family.
Some of you may know that we are wrapping up the Year of the Snake in the Chinese Zodiac, a year that symbolizes transformation, wisdom, and renewal. If your 2025 has been anything like mine, you’ve definitely felt some sort of shift — a letting go, voluntary or involuntary, of old modes of being, old timelines, versions of yourself that it’s time to say goodbye to. Goodbyes are hard, but they’re also beautiful, because they call in the next chapter. I've been trying to meet these changes with open arms, and have felt an intense urge to clear my physical spaces — for those of you looking to clean out your closets, remember the GreenTree textile recycling bin stays with us through the winter. Such an easy and sustainable way to discard your textiles at the market! Did you know they take shoes, belts and handbags, in addition to linens and clothing? Please remember to put everything in bags.
This next year is a Year of the Horse, symbolizing energy, freedom, and action. Time to dream big and take good care of ourselves along the way. That means eating healthy and well!
Boogie Down Bronx Honey will be back at the market this week, and it’s a great idea to grab some honey to make this immune-boosting Fire Honey over the winter! Rather than using powdered turmeric, you could even pick some up fresh from Halal Pastures. There’s also this Fire Honey Cider, which calls for garlic and onions, all of which we have in abundance at the market!
Tis the season of hardy greens! I’ve been cooking up a lot of kale and Swiss chard lately, with the big beautiful bunches from Madura Farms and Titusville. I sauté mine with some market aromatics, Tivoli mushrooms, and Agape Premium EVOO, then add veggie stock. Want to boost your nutrition? Use some Letterbox bone broth instead. Would you rather keep your greens crunchy? Try this kale and Brussels sprouts salad that promises to taste like a healthy, crisp Caesar. Also, here's a pro-tip for those of you wanting protein in the morning. Cook up some extra kale so you have leftovers and in the morning, put it in a pan and crack two market eggs on top. Breakfast of champions. Up to you if you want to add some of Letterbox's infamous bacon.
I’ve also been on a turkey meatball kick, and am intrigued to try these, made with White Moustache Persian-style yogurt and R&M Farm's ground turkey.
El Norte Empanadas will be here this week! I can’t wait to get my hands on their baked fugazzeta (onion and cheese) variety. Or, I might try Ariel's belly-warming, protein-packed locro, a traditional Argentine stew.
Aux Petits Délices, formerly known as Gaelle's French Pastries will be here to help you restock your cookie trays for parties. L'Imprimerie is a Brooklyn-based bakery specializing in exquisite sourdough loaves. So many varieties! Good luck picking just one.
For your New Year's Eve or Day party platters, make sure to stop at Aya Hummus for Jenny's delectable (and healthy) hummus choices. Also stop at Bonnes Saveurs, a new vendor for the winter season who specializes in Mediterranean dips and spreads. Try his extremely addictive chickpea chips which happen to also be gluten-free. YAY. Don't forget the charcuterie at Iberian Delights, and the new pickle "flights" at Doc Pickle. And, of course, a stop at Aux Bons Fromages is a must.
We won't have Elderberry Road with us this week, as baker Amy Shermann is taking a well deserved day off, so you might want to get baking yourselves! We've got apples aplenty at the market, and Sugar Shack Creamery will be back, so why not try this apple and cajeta crisp from Zoe Bakes? Cajeta is a rich Mexican caramel made with goat milk! I for one am intrigued. Want something more rustic and French? Try this apple almond galette with the recommended cranberry ice cream.
Red Barn Bakery will be here with their award-winning organic scones and savory tarts. They're also bringing a bevy of homespun soups like roasted cauliflower with rose petals and carrot ginger.
Fearless Food Truck will be with us again, as well as Cano Coffee, filling in for Austin who is in Paris for the week. Whether you choose to warm up with lentil soup, or a hot steaming cup of coffee, we don’t judge! Come say Happy New Year, and enjoy our last outdoor market. In January and February, we’ll be moving inside the school — though you'll still find some of our hearty vendors like Pura Vida Fisheries and Titusville Farms out front, braving the cold.
Happy Holidays and here's to a new and beautiful year ahead, packed with memorable meals.
We plan on being open on Sunday, but because of the impending storm, PLEASE CHECK OUR SOCIALS and our website before heading out!
Stay safe!
