Thanksgiving

Does anyone remember Winnie the Pooh and the Rather Blustery Day? That’s what last week at the market felt like! Thanks for sticking with us in the maelstrom!

This upcoming market is the last before Thanksgiving, and we’ve got you covered! And it’s not just food — Matt at Ready, Set, Sharp will happily get your knives carving-ready. Those of you who have been asking for him, take note; this Sunday is the day!

I’ll be going to Boston to see my sister, brother-in-law, and godmothers, and I’ll be packing a honey nut squash from Titusville Farms to make a pie. Once, many years ago, tired of the usual pie suspects (pumpkin, nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon) I decided to try something different, with a different squash, vanilla, sweetened condensed milk, and maple syrup. Unfortunately I didn’t write the recipe down, so I’ll have to try to recreate it from memory — those of you who like a bit more structure might be interested in this absolutely stunning salted honey nut squash pie, sure to dazzle any guests.

You’ll need some Maplebrook Creamery maple syrup, which can be used in so many ways for this holiday feast! Grab some Brussels sprouts from Madura, apples from Mead, and sweet potatoes from Titusville to give these maple roasted veggies a try. Or, for a more root veggie oriented version, pick up some of the gorgeous rainbow carrots from Halal Pastures Farm, as well as beets and parsnips, and try making this. You can’t go wrong with maple glazed veggies, especially when you also use Agape Premium Olive Oil EVOO!

For those of you looking to save some oven real estate, this intriguing crockpot stuffing could be a winner. Or, if you prefer the crunchy top layer of stuffing, this cast iron skillet version promises that texture throughout!

And as for side salads at your holiday table, some of the delicious pears from Caradonna Farms would be the perfect base for this unique pear, sweet potato, and radicchio salad.

Whether you roast or marinate or smoke your bird, an R&M turkey is the perfect centrepiece for your table. (Along with gorgeous Titusville flowers, and stunning Madura gourds.) Looking for some guidance as to how to tackle this important Thanksgiving main character? How about turning to chef Ina Garten and her instructions for a luscious roast turkey

And in the days before Thanksgiving, if you need some easier meals before the big day, we’ve got Mama Hu’s Sushi Bakes for you this Sunday, ready to be popped in the oven. Hungry at the market itself? The Taco Project food truck will be there, along with Escargot Voyageur and Grumpy Dumpling

How about if you need a gift to bring to your holiday hosts, or some cozy decor if you’re the ones hosting? The Copper Faucet Soap Company has candles so good you’ll be tempted to eat them too — but try to resist!

The band on Sunday will be the wonderful market favorite The Altogether, a folk trio that features our fantastic former Irvington manager Sierra Scott.

The Irvington Turkey Trot is on this Sunday, so we will be closing the market early at 1pm! Come early to get all your goodies. And for those of you asking for the winter hours, grab a flyer from the market tent! We will be closed on November 30th, and switching to once every two weeks in December. But don’t worry, we alternate weekends with the Hastings Farmers Market, so there will still be a market nearby every weekend. They’ll take Saturdays and we’ll stick to our delightful Sundays, starting December 14th.

Here’s something else to add to the holiday cheer: New York State has restored SNAP benefits! We’re so relieved that families who rely on SNAP can once again access their benefits, and so proud of how the community showed up to support them while the federal funds were frozen! This Sunday, Feeding Westchester will be coming to pick up $1600 worth of donated food from our vendors, made possible by your generosity and compassion! Look for their truck on Sunday, and please, thank them for their important work. Tis the season!
