Our last "indoor" market of the season means spring is within reach!

February is winding to a close, and I’d be remiss if I didn’t highlight some recipes by Black chefs and bakers in honor of Black History Month! If you’re looking for a sweet, decadent breakfast,  pan-sear some heirloom apples from Caradonna Farm with lemon juice and honey from Boogie Down Bronx Honey to compliment Malawah, or Somali sweet pancakes. Prefer to start your day in a more savory fashion? Try this garlic butter shrimp and grits with plump shrimp from Pura Vida, natch. You can also try a similar plant-based option, BBQ lentils over cheese gritsThe Lentil Co. has a fantastic variety of lentils you can cook with, although they’re pre-seasoned; if you want to experiment with flavors, be our guest! You can pick up kitchen staples like onions and carrots from Madura Farm to use in flavorful Jollof rice, and you can braise ribs from FarmEats or R&M Farm in a curried peanut sauce for a hearty dinner after a day of hiking or shoveling (hopefully, not too much more of that!). When you’re ready for dessert, sweet potatoes from Madura will shine in this purple sweet potato pie.

My household is currently experiencing the travesty of having finished all of our hot sauce at once, so I’ll be paying a visit to Emmaline’s Hot Sauce this Sunday. You can incorporate any of Alice and Alicia’s family recipes in pretty much any dish you can imagine, but this buffalo style quinoa chili is perfect for cold winter nights. You can also pick up chicken or turkey from R&M Farm to blend with their hot sauce in spicy tahini meatballs or spice up some tempeh tacos. You can even douse some of their hot sauce on baked empanadas from Empabake right at the market!

Need something interesting and indulgent to take down the heat and the spice, try a tahini fudge brownie from Anish Supreme Foods. So rich, you can enjoy it over a couple of days. I dare you to try. Or, consider a Hungarian crescent cookie from The Countryside Bakery. Did you know that Dora (the countryside baker) went to cater a Superbowl Party for 25 people after the last market. Our food artisans are rock stars!

Ready Set Sharp! will be sharpening your kitchen knives center stage in the auditorium, so be sure to bring whatever you need sharpened from quilting scissors, to bread knives to pruning shears,to the market. If you get hungry while you’re exploring, Escargot Voyageur has crêpes and terrific veggie quiches capped with goat cheese. Don't overlook his heat and serve ragouts and tagines. Just the thing to warm up on Sunday if you will be just getting back from vacation. Copper Faucet Soap Co., right at the entrance of the auditorium, will greet you with aromatic soaps, body butters, and candles to make both your house and your skin glow this winter. Also, please add Raw Chocolate Love to the mix!

R&M Farm wants you to know they will be taking pre-orders for corned beef (for St.Paddy's Day) and for their popular Easter hams at the market this week.

We’ll see you at the market!
