Sweet and Sour cherries!
While some orchards are still waiting for their sour cherries to ripen, Caradonna Farm had both sweet and sour cherries at the market last week.
Cherries are one of my favorite summer snacks and ingredients, because sweet cherries are sweet but not too sweet, and sour cherries are tart but not too tart. You can pit your preferred cherry the night before and toss them in a bowl of creamy morning oatmeal with pistachios and Boogie Down Bronx Honey for a deceptively easy but elevated start to the day.
For dinner this week, the gooey sweetness of brandied cherries will shine through next to herby thyme from Halal Pastures Farm and aromatic garam masala. This shimmery fruit mixture pairs especially well with a perfect sear on your favorite pork chops from R&M Farm or Letterbox Farm.
There is a lot of debate among pie bakers as to whether sweet or sour cherries are better to fill a cherry pie – a summer classic. Turns out that a mixture of both varieties is the way to go, according to this recipe from Serious Eats.
And if you're as excited for cherry season as I am, try an endlessly snackable dessert that freezes well and will keep on giving: cherry rugelach with cardamom sugar. There's just nothing better than a perfectly spiced cherry, especially when it's wrapped up in cream cheese dough!
Copper Faucet Soap Co. will return this Sunday with signature soaps, candles, diffusers, and lotions to help you embrace the summer season, and Bloody Good Mud is back with their versatile bloody Mary mixes! The beautiful mix jars are great as housewarming gifts, seasonings, or just as the cherry on top (so to speak...) of brunch with friends.
Vicente Saavedra will be playing and singing his melodious Latin guitar tunes for us from 10:30-12:30, so grab a cup of Cano Coffee or your favorite Teagevity, enjoy a DoughCo Bagel, and enjoy a beautiful Sunday outside. Don't forget to borrow a blanket from the market tent for a spontaneous picnic.
And, don't forget to bring all your knives, pruning shears, scissors and anything else that needs a blade boost! The knife sharpener will be in the house!
See you Sunday!
