Thank you, Irvington!
If there’s one thing last Sunday showed, it’s that the spirit of community care is alive and well at our farmer’s market! Irvington: thanks to your generosity we raised over a thousand dollars to feed our SNAP families whose benefits have been cut off due to the government shutdown. We’re going to keep the drive rolling throughout November, so please, keep giving! One in four American children relies on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program; needless to say, it’s an incredibly worthy cause. Any leftover funds that don’t go directly toward SNAP customers will be donated to a local food pantry for Thanksgiving meals.
This past week, I got to spend some time with a dear friend of mine who has just given birth to her second daughter. I can’t wait for this sweet little girl to grow up, and to watch her unique personality emerge! I wonder what her first words are going to be? Mine, according to my mother, were either “egg” or “lamb” — she can’t remember which, but she knows it was a request for more of my favorite foods! And to this day, my preferred way to make lamb is still the way my mother does it, seared on the stove and smothered with apricot preserves mixed with Worcestershire sauce.
But there’s also this recipe! So grab some lamb from R&M Farm and sturdy potatoes and garlic from Titusville Farm to give it a try. Or perhaps some ginger from Halal Pastures Farm and some Tivoli mushrooms, to prepare this fabulous lamb and mushroom korma.
As for my other favorite childhood food, you know we have plenty of egg options at the market! Letterbox Farm, R &M Farm, and Titusville Farm have you covered in eggs-cellent fashion. I love a classic scrambled or fried egg for breakfast, but you could also pick up Letterbox broth and make egg drop soup. Or this delicious Love and Lemons recipe for deviled eggs, perfect for a party.
The beautiful bunches of kale from Titusville are looking very tempting, so I am going to get some this Sunday to make a kale caesar salad. The urge to balance out heavy comfort food with salads is strong this time of year!
I’m also going to be scooping up some other salad staples, such as arugula, Caradonna apples, Maplebrook mozzarella, and a vinaigrette from Channery Hill Farm.
Even though I compost religiously (and as a reminder, you can too, thanks to our amazing compost volunteers!) I hate watching any of my produce go bad, so I always try to have multiple plans on hand for any ingredient. This chicken with arugula and mustard pan sauce is a great way to use up the rest of my arugula and my favorite protein.
DoughCo Bagels wants to help stretch your budget with a market special: $20 scores you a half dozen bagels and a tub of cream cheese. Bitchin’ Babkas and Red Barn Bakery will be here for sweet treats, and Ariella Ceramics is back this week with her gorgeous pottery. Julie Corbalis will provide live music from 10:30am - 12:30pm, and it's Dough Nation Pizza Truck's penultimate visit of the season. It’s going to be another beautiful day at the market — come say hi!
