Finally... it feels like fall

Although we got rained on at last week's market, I was happy to see so many brave faces under sturdy umbrellas in what felt like a quintessential late summer storm. I hope the farm-fresh fare you took home made the journey worth it, and we certainly have some deliciousness in store for you this week!

First things first: Happy New Year to those who celebrate! Both Wright's Farm and Caradonna Farm will have plenty of just-picked apples as well as challah bread (Wave Hill Breads) for your Rosh Hashanah celebrations. Head straight to the WagonFull Flower Farm to gussy up your table.

Wright's Farm has beautiful pears, too, which are some of my favorite fruits to cook with because their sweet, floral flavor mixes well with both warming spices like garam masala in this spiced pear pie and adds bright acidity when included in savory dishes as in this dish of Korean meatballs and noodles. You can pick up ground beef for the pear-infused meatballs at FarmEats or R&M Farm, and noodles from La Trafila if you prefer linguine to udon. This herbed grain salad with mushrooms, hazelnuts and pears also shines a spotlight on pears  alongside frilly dill and garlic, which you can find at Stoneberry Farm. Get your olive oil from Arlotta Food Studio, and your fungi from Madura Farm, natch.

Cucumbers (Great Joy Family Farm and Wright's Farm) are similar to pears in that they are so very versatile. Shrimp from Pura Vida would be fantastic in this smashed cucumber, avocado and shrimp salad, while the vibrant, peppery radishes from Stoneberry Farm would complement cucumbers' sweet freshness in this salad with harissa yogurt. If you're looking for a main course, you can't go wrong with classic burgers with cucumber-celery slaw and cheese from Cooperstown Cheese or chicken thighs from R&M roasted with cherries from Caradonna Farm and topped off with cucumber yogurt.

It seems we're always introducing you to a new vendor here at the Irvington Farmers Market and this Sunday is no exception. Please give a warm Irvington welcome to EmpabakeEmpanadas - always baked, never fried empanadas. Their empanadas filled with ropa vieja and plantains sell out quickly...consider yourself warned! Jeremy from SMOK'D is back with his mouth-watering cornish game hen on a spit if you prefer your  protein straight. To quench your thirst, you can pick up a smoothie from Ambrosia Food Truck or cold pressed juice from Fairy Juice Bar.

Sam Brown will be playing for us from 10:30-12:30, and you won't want to miss her!

We'll see you at the market!

p.s. You'll be happy to know that three of the rescue dogs that were at the market last Sunday have adoptions pending, including Jack, who was adopted by our very own market director, Pascale. Talk about new beginnings!
